The gaps between #tech & #medicine that erode trust are many. At Medigram, Inc. we are working to mitigate this by cross-training technical staff in scientific principles and vice versa for physicians on technical principles. Typical medicine and tech gaps of trust are related to a variety of different themes including but not limited to, nontechnical people making technical decisions, people who have been technical in the past but now going newly into unrelated, irrelevant areas asserting decisions over those areas where they lack real expertise because of the cult of personality > critical thinking. The latter can be related to the former. Finally, ignorance for expectations in science. One issue that every leader should pay attention to is #misinformation. Unfortunately, the latter can also come from fringe scientists and physicians as well, so the occupation is no guarantee of immunity from spewing misinformation. Why should you care? Because in the longest-running survey of its kind, the Edelman Trust Barometer; the goal of the workforce overwhelmingly includes improving their own science literacy. The easiest way to do that is to improve your own science literacy and contribution towards the trust of technologists & leaders by the workforce, scientific & medical communities. Further, Forrester puts misinformation at the top together with #cybersecurity as the specific reasons to expect a rise in a lack of trust in healthcare systems.
Step 1) Save this guide to your phone and don’t talk about or share studies or information that have one or more of these gaps. If the information is promising or compelling but preliminary, acknowledge the gaps.
Step 2) If there are topics that could be supported without studies, work to identify the first principles that would justify the decision from a cellular, atomic, or bit level of detail and logic.
Only do the above two things if your success hinges on having the trust & respect of young people, gifted people including systems engineers & bioengineers, trained scientists, & physicians. If you are in crypto or self-driving cars & direct to consumers tech, or lightweight B2B “big data” or administrative tech, you can probably ignore this medically related info.
